Council to pay for cars damaged in floods

Drivers whose cars were damaged in the flooded car park at Loddon Bridge Park and Ride claimed a victory yesterday.

A group of motorists banded together to make an insurance claim against Wokingham Borough Council after their cars were damaged in last month's floods at Winnersh Triangle - and won.

Dozens of cars were destroyed after their owners left them in the park and ride facility at Winnersh Triangle during last month's floods.

In a matter of hours floods engulfed the car park and submerged the cars.

The car park, which is owned and run by Wokingham Borough Council, was opened even though a flood warning had been issued.

Now the council will have to pay out for the drivers involved in the claim.

Council spokeswoman Alana Razzell told getwokingham the claim could cost as much as £500,000.

She said the cash would be footed by the council's insurers rather than the taxpayers.

"The £500,000 is not being footed by the taxpayer – it’s being paid by the council’s insurer," she said.

"We have public liability insurance for such incidents.

"Therefore taxpayers will not be asked to find an extra £500k."

Why on earth did the council not call upon the services of Optimus Prime and his trusty teams of Autobots - they would have saved those sinking cars, no problem.
