Emmbrook School shuts again as floods hit Wokingham

By Victoria Corbett
February 10, 2009

Hundreds of Emmbrook School pupils have been told to stay at home today as floodwaters lap dangerously close to classrooms.

Years Seven to 10 at the school have been told to stay at home, while Years 11, 12 and 13 will attend the school in Emmbrook Road as normal.

A message on the school’s website states there is significant flooding to areas of the school site and water is moving towards the buildings.

Other areas in Wokingham are also suffering from last night’s heavy rainfall, which caused the remaining snow on the ground to melt and overwhelm the Emm Brook.

Sylvester Close in Winnersh and the car park at the Best Western Moat House Hotel in Sindlesgham have been hit by floods.

Flooding has been reported in other areas such as Swallowfield.

They should consider building the school on a boat - they can keep criminals on them so why not design one for education. Would save the council having to move the school, and would mean pupils' can attend school what ever the weather.

I bet the children are loving it - it's like Christmas has come early!

Top marks to the geniuses who decided to build it in the first place all those years ago.

It's good to see bad decisions were made even then.

Once again my son is missing another valuable day of school!

Surely everyone has realised that if a river floods once, then it is most likely to flood again?! Mr Mathias does a sterling job of trying to keep the school open but until there are adequate flood defences (or the school is moved to somewhere more sensible) then he is fighting a losing battle...

This really should be very high on the Council's priority list.
