Traffic chaos as Denmark Street still closed

March 09, 2009

Wokingham's Denmark Street will remain shut today as more problems with leaking water were spotted.

The town centre's busy raod was closed at the weekend to allow Thames Water Utilities to carry out emergency work to repair two collapsed sewers.

But while carrying out the emergency repairs workers discovered a massive hole under the road, which they say was caused by water leaking from a drainage pipe.

The closure of the road is causing traffic misery for drivers who say there are no diversion signs to warn them of the problem.

Are you having problems on the roads? Let everyone know here.

One motorist told getwokingham this morning: "The traffic is backed up all the way to Bracknell.

"There are no diversion signs or anything. It is the worst I have ever seen."

Wokingham Borough Council said signs are to be put up but warned drivers they should expect delays.

The problem means Thames Water Utilities's work is being delayed and the road will remain shut today in the hope it will reopen tomorrow - it the repairs are finished.

- Denmark Street will be closed from its junction with Peach Street to its junction with Langborough Road.

Langborough Road will remain open to businesses and residents via Murdoch Road only.

Denmark Street car park will be open as usual today although access will be via the Finchampstead Road / Wellington Road end of Denmark Street and two way temporary traffic lights will be in operation.
