FLOODY HELL!

July 26, 2007

THIS is the sight that greeted Wokingham Times reader Tony Dean at Sandhurst Town Football Club.

The club’s commercial director, 56, and his daughter, Emily, 21, visited the ground last week in preparation for the Fizzers pre-season friendly against Bracknell Town on Saturday.

But the pair could not believe their eyes when they saw the Bottom Meadow pitch in Yorktown Road more than four feet under water after flooding.

Dean said: “I have never seen anything like it. The rivers has burst their banks and the water covered the entire site including the ground and the car park.

“I managed to get into the clubhouse but that was about a foot deep in water too.”

Sandhurst secretary Mike Ellsmore added: “It must be a record to have a game called off in mid-July due to a flooded pitch.

It’s a worry because there could be some electrical damage.

“We’re hoping to get the game on again but there is a lot of work to be done to get the place in good order and with the weather, who knows?”

The match has been rescheduled for Thursday night.
