Gavin gives Banbury a Tongue lashing
August 09, 2006
It was Finchampstead’s fourth win of the season as they begin to show the sort of form that won them the championship in 2001.
Lee Nurse’s side moved up to fourth place after this five wicket victory which was superbly led by Tonge who took figures of 5-56.
Nurse decided to ask hosts Banbury to bat first in good conditions. And his choice was soon rewarded as Banbury managed to put only 20 on the board before both openers were dismissed by Tonge in his fourth over.
Finchampstead piled on the pressure and Tonge was ably assisted by seamers Anthony Parson and Steve Bloyce.
A three-wicket burst from Bloyce dented the Oxfordshire’s side middle order and left them reeling on 5-58.
And there was no let-up as Sam Taylor joined the all-seam attack and wickets fell with Banbury reduced to 89-9.
Late strokes from Simon Launder and Luke Ryan saw Banbury achieve a total of 125 in 45 overs.
Tonge took the most wickets followed by Bloyce’s 3-19 and Taylor’s 3-17 in a good bowling performance.
But Finchampstead did not get off to a great start when it was their turn to.
They were soon in trouble with skipper Nurse out early and with Stuart Seymour and Jamie Kingstone both lbw they were struggling at 26-4 after 15 overs.
The needed consolidation came from Tom Burrows and Paul Carter as they steadily built the score to 87 in 12 overs before Carter played on to Paul Taylor for a good 37.
Finchampstead then cantered to victory by five wickets, ending on 128-5.
Burrows finished with an excellent 46 not out in a really impressive performance by Finchampstead.
