BEES REACH SEMIS
January 03, 2002
They made the most of their first two powerplay opportunities to take a 2-0 first period lead.
Hurley opened the scoring after Sheffield's Jeff Sebastian had been sent to the sinbin for slashing.
Then Blake Knox added a second goal while Brad Lauer was serving a two-plus-10-minute penalty for a cross check from behind.
Chris Brant blasted in a bullet at 27.08 to put Bees 3-0 up.
Scott Allison netted the first of his hat-trick of goals to get Sheffield off the mark a little more than a minute after Brant's goal.
And he trimmed the deficit to 3-2 early in the third period.
But Sheffield's hopes of a recovery received a setback when Lauer's 10-minute misconduct penalty earned him an automatic dismissal.
Hurley then pounced to make it 4-2 to Bees.
And an unassisted powerplay goal by Steve O'Rourke extended Bees' lead further, while Paul Kruse was serving a slashing penalty.
Allison completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute but it was all in vain for Sheffield whose netminder Ryan Bach and coach Mike Blaisdell received gross misconduct penalties from referee Nigel Boniface after the players had left the ice.
