Heartache for injury-hit Berkshire U20

Berkshire Under-20s 17 Kent 20
A last-gasp Kent penalty condemned injury-hit Berkshire to defeat in their opening match of the new-look National Under-20 Championship Group 4 match at St Bart’s Hospital ground in Chislehurst.
Trailing 14-0 at the interval, Berkshire fought back well in the second half with two tries in as many minutes from impressive centre Alex Johnston cutting the deficit to just four points.
Kent hit back with a penalty to lead 17-10 before a try from Reading Abbey replacement fly-half Joe Murphy had the teams all square with four minutes plus injury-time remaining.
However, with the last kick of the game, Kent added a second penalty to steal the match.
Head coach Mike Tewkesbury said: “We got off to a bright start but didn’t control the phases, lost the ball too easily and showed a lack of patience and confidence finishing off what we had created.
“We also lost three players through injury, including two line-out forwards so it did change the balance.”
He added: “I think the group is still open, but the standard is a lot higher than last season and equates with the ebb and flow of playing Gloucestershire last year, so we can expect all of the games to be tight.”
Berkshire face Hertfordshire next at Maidenhead RFC on Sunday, December 2 at 2.30pm.
