Keith Wilkinson and Paul Emery scored second-half tries as Abbey came from behind to clinch their place in the semi-finals of the Berkshire Cup.
A Jack Parsons penalty got Abbey off the mark only for Newbury to respond with two converted tries.
Fly-half Sam Butcher reduced the deficit to 14-8 when he went over a minute before the break.
Abbey’s pack held sway after the restart and tries from No. 8 Wilkinson and prop Emery proved enough.
Both sides fielded a mixture of first teamers and colts and Abbey youngsters Ben Davis, Luke McNickle, Jack Husbands and Elko Titcombe de Brie slotted in perfectly.
The backs were strengthened by the return of Butcher, Parsons and Arron Ross, while lock Simon Allison and hooker Craig Woodley, who was making his first team outing, put in strong performances.
Abbey’s next match is against fellow South West 1 East strugglers Bletchley at Rosehill on March 24.
- Matt Mills grabbed the crucial try as Abbey Colts beat Oxford 8-3 on Sunday to move up to second place in their league.
