Reading Rugby Club can keep car park

Officials at Reading Rugby Football Club have been told they can keep a recently-laid car park at their home in Sonning.

A retrospective application requesting permission to keep the car park at the club’s home in Sonning Lane was last week approved by the planning committee at Wokingham Borough Council.

Decision due on Reading Rugby Football Club car park

Councillor Mike Haines, ward member for Sonning, had asked his borough council colleagues to make a final decision on the plans because of concerns relating to the impact the Tarmac could have on the surrounding countryside.

Craig Hunter, chairman of the rugby club, argued the land had always been used for parking, but was causing problems in its natural state during periods of bad weather.

Members felt the club had no case to answer and approved the plans, although Cllr Phil Challis and Cllr Charlotte Haitham-Taylor, ward members for Loddon and Shinfield South, abstained from the final vote at the meeting on Wednesday, February 8, at Shute End.

It is a pity that they aren't using one of the more eco friendly solutions instead of tarmac. For example the solution adopted by St Crispins School when they extended their carpark created a hard suface with grass growing through holes in the surface. While at first sight these appear more expensive by the time the costs of decent drainage is installed for a tarmac surface this is much less than expected.
