Irish sign Buist from Falcons

London Irish have signed Andy Buist from Guiness Premiership rivals Newcastle Falcons on a two-year contract.

The 24-year-old can play lock or in the back row.

Born in Norwich, he grew up in Hampshire before moving to Northumberland due to his father’s involvement with the Royal Air Force. He played for the Alnwick club before joining the Newcastle Academy where he was ‘Player of the Season’ for 2003-04.

He was promoted to the Falcons’ first team squad for the 2006-07 season and has since made 59 appearances and scored 15 points.

London Irish head coach Toby Booth said: “When opportunity knocks you have to take it.  James Hudson’s departure (to Newcastle) created an opportunity for another ambitious player to come and benefit from our player development system.

“Andy Buist has been unlucky with injury but is now fully fit and excited about joining our club.

“He is the sort of player that will help us capitalise on the way the game is evolving.”

Buist said: “It is a positive change for me, one that I’m really looking forward to. I admire the type of game that London Irish plays and I want to be part of it.

“I grew up in the south-east of England and went to Lord Wandsworth College near Hook and Alton RFC in Hampshire where I learned my rugby.

“I’m looking forward to moving back to the area and catching up with friends and family.”
