Dorliac’s hat-trick wins derby

Winger Alex Dorliac scored a hat-trick of tries as Reading secured a comfortable victory against local rivals Abbey in the South-West Division 2 East derby at Holme Park.

New scrum-half Richard Lester, lock Ben Hughes and No. 8 Scott Heirene added touchdowns, while full-back James Balfry kicked three conversions.

Yet the visitors were also able to take plenty of positives out of Saturday’s game.

Abbey scored the best try of the match in the second half when they ran the ball out from deep inside their own half and slick handling and running resulted in wing Christoph Bart touching down.

Bart also scored their second try right on full-time after more good handling and passing.

Reading won because of their strength in the scrum.

Gensians crashed to their heaviest South West 1 defeat of the season and their sixth in succession.

Full-back Jevon Marsh, wing Joao Costa, prop James Baker and flanker Alex Dawkins all pulled out during the week and it was a bridge too far against a tough Gloucestershire side beaten only once on their ground this season.

Skipper Gavin Marsh offered no excuses, saying: “The senior core of the side was there, but we were exposed. They took the game to us and holes opened up where holes weren’t before and they exploited them at will.

“They played good rugby and it was the best performance by any team against us this season.”
