Bracknell Rugby Club has been disqualified from this season’s EDF National Trophy.
The club fielded an ineligible player- prop Gareth Staples- in their 23-0 first round win over Oxford Harlequins.
In a statement from the club, Coach Chris Sheasby said: “Firstly myself, Greg Anstead and Ben Nowak would like to apologise to all our supporters for the mistake we made in selecting and playing an unregistered player in the EDF Energy National Trophy match against Oxford Harlequins.”
“We all missed the fact that we had selected an unregistered player for the match day squad for one reason or another, we can assure everyone that we will not make the same mistake again.”
“We are bitterly disappointed as we were looking forward to a run in the cup which is a nice distraction from the league for coaches, players and supporters alike. We look forward to your continued and valued support for the rest of the season.”
Bracknell will not be penalised financially and will be allowed to compete in next year’s competition.
The team is back in league action on Saturday with a home game against sixth-placed Barnstaple (kick off 2:15pm).
