Cockerill clarifies Thorpe's switch from London Irish to Leicester

Richard Cockerill has attempted to clear up any confusion over Leicester Tigers' recruitment of Richard Thorpe from London Irish.

Cockerill originally said that Leicester had come to an 'agreement with London Irish who have paid some of his salary for this year'.

London Irish confirmed on Tuesday that they had released Thorpe on June 30 but insisted in a club statement 'contrary to recent reports, London Irish can confirm that they will not be paying any of Richard's wages at his new club'.

Leicester's director of rugby has now clarified his original comment in an attempt to prevent any misunderstanding.

Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury: "They (London Irish) didn't want Thorpe to see out his contract and they came to a compromise agreement in which they pay him to leave.

"Thus, he doesn't need the same amount of salary from us to play for us."
