Super Saints lift cup

April 22, 2009

Woodley Saints Ladies Football Club crowned another outstanding season by winning the Thames Valley Counties Women’s League Cup final.

They defeated Headington Athletic 3-0 at Reading Town’s ground.

It gave them the league and cup double for the second successive season.

They have not been beaten in any league game, and their only defeats have come in cup competitions when they met teams from a higher league.

Saints, managed by Dave Caswell, never looked in any danger of losing the final played on Sunday.

Quickly taking control of the midfield, they dominted the game and were far too skillful for a plucky Headington side.

Serena Hickman gave them the lead after 20 minute with a fine lob.

Chloe Rostron hit the post and Hickman shot narrowly wide before

Town doubled their lead four minutes into the second half when Jess Grimmett turned in a cross from skipper Nicola Harding.

Substitute Amie Benton cracked home the third goal in the 77th minute.

Julie Brocks, 42, came off the bench to join her daughter Vicky in the team, but she plans to hang up her boots at the end of the season.

- Bracknell Town defeated holders Chesham United to win the Berks and Bucks Women’s Cup for the first time in their history.

With 90 minutes and extra time failing to produce a goal, Sunday’s final tie went to penalties with Bracknell winning 3-1 and giving birthday girl Angie Barton the chance to lift the cup.
