Federici in contention for Fulham after Reading FC clean sheet

By Jonny Fordham
October 22, 2012

Adam Federici put himself in contention for Reading’s squad to face Fulham on Saturday with a clean sheet for the under-21s.

The fit-again goalkeeper looked confident and mobile in the 3-0 home win against Norwich City on Monday night.

Winger Jordan Obita dedicated his 26th-minute opener to his late grandfather, scoring in what has been a tough week personally for the exciting young talent.

Obita then set up Dominic Samuel for his first of two soon after the break, with the England Under-19 striker side-footing a sweet shot past Declan Rudd in the Canaries’ goal in the 53rd minute.

Samuel then put the game to bed with an instinctive strike from the edge of the box to seal the victory with 15 minutes to go.

Other standout performances came from centre-backs Sean Morrison and Alex Pearce – with full-back Ian Harte’s left foot causing Norwich’s defence endless worries.

In midfield Aaron Tshibola looks a decent player in the making, not afraid to get stuck in and run at the opposition with the ball at his feet.

Reading Under-21s: Federici, Arnold, Pearce, Morrison, Harte, Taylor, D’Ath, Tshibola, Obita (Losasso, 78), Samuel, Church. Subs not used: Henly, Webb, MacDonald, Keown.

Just an FA Cup game in January to look forward to for Federici I think......McCarthy has been superb and deserves to keep his place.

poru, Bournemouth - totally agreed - his first competitive game should be in the Cup match next week. What if he has a howler on Saturday - are we going to ping-pong our keepers every other game?

Alex is in form. Madness to drop him now. If bm does that and feds throws another one in it will be a disaster. Too risky keep it as it is. Perhaps Obita deserves a bench on sat. Clearly will play 2 up against Fulham. Got to be all guns blaxing. Expect a load of shots on goal from us. Just got to make it hard for fulham to supply berb.

"The fit-again goalkeeper looked confident and mobile in the 3-0 home win against Norwich City on Monday night!".

Not sure you can say he looked mobile, when he virtually nothing to do expect coming for a cross which he missed by a county mile resulting in Norwich hitting the bar.

Royals won at a canter, Samuel looks clinical in front of goal, D'Ath impressed me in midfield whilst Morrison and Pearce completely bossed the Norwich front line out of the game.

Having watched the game, I wouldn't say he looked mobile as he had nothing to do all game apart from coming for a cross and hetting nowhere near it, resulting in Norwich hitting the bar.

Impressed by Samuels finishing, D'Ath certainly looks a good prospect whilst Morrison and Pearce were dominant at the back.

Have to agree with the previous comments. It would be very harsh to drop Alex now.

Dropping Alex for Feds to return seems harsh. Alex is the sole reason Swansea away was just two points dropped, rather than all bloody three! Fantastic during the QPR cup match, made some very important saves at Liverpool and against Newcastle.

I'll admit however he has looked shaky when it comes to back passes. Dare I say it I think maybe where Alex did his best to bloke Sterling's shot on Saturday (and came close too) Feds would've come out and tried to rob the ball off him.

I hate to say it, but I think this will happen as McD has previous for it. Remember when Feds got injured in the run up to Wembley? Alex was great then and for no real reason Feds was put back in. For Alex's great performaces we are still letting goals in for one reason or another. Maybe McD will give Feds his place back due to his longer-relationship with the back four?

Alex has done well since he has been in the side (except his first game nerves!) He was prem goalkeeper of the week recently, and doing well. Previously he has sat patiently in the wings awaiting his chance. To drop him now just because Feds is now fit would be a slap in the face for him.

Let Feds sit it out for a bit, to confirm his ongoing commitment to the club.

i hope AF is just in contention for a place on the bench... for me mccarthy has always been the better keeper and should now be considered number one..

AF shouldnt get a sniff of getting his place back until mccarthy is sidelined through injury
