Fantatical Reading FC fan is a hit in the USA

A die-hard Royals fan got a visit from Fox Sports News this week after the American TV company picked up on his story from our very own Royals Post podcast.

Dave West, dad of show host Alan, is famous on the terraces amongst Royals after going to watch Reading play on the day of his wedding.

Recalling the magical day when he tied the knot with wife Sonia on February 23, 1980, Mr West joked that the only thing in the world that he would swap his other half for would be a box at Madejski Stadium.

He told getreading: “I didn’t want to miss any of the Reading games at Elm Park, but the only  three dates we could get married on all clashed with home games.

“Luckily Reading Register Office could marry us at 11am and I was thinking that would leave me enough time to have a drink with friends and family, go to the game and then join everyone else at the reception at the ICL club on Portman Road later that night.”

After 32 years of married bliss, Mr West admits that if his F1 fan wife Sonia had got the chance to go to a race meet on the same day of his wedding, then she would have done exactly the same to him.

“I’m always getting a bit of stick from people about it all today,” added the loyal Royal.

“My wedding day was an absolute bonus as Reading beat Sheffield United 2-1.

“Sonia understands my love of football and we had been together for two years before tying the knot, so she knew.

“I had to leave early from a holiday in Germany a few years ago to watch Reading play Walsall in the Division 1 play-off final. She was okay with that too.”

Division Two or League One Play-off final? It was known as Division Two at the time. League One sounds silly in my opinion. Bring back Divisions one to four I say!
