Chris Gunter signs for Reading FC

By Jonny Fordham
July 18, 2012

Chris Gunter became the last piece in Brian McDermott’s jigsaw just hours after the Reading boss landed Adrian Mariappa from Watford for an initial £2million.

Gunter, who has penned a three-year deal with the option of another year at Madejski Stadium, cost £2.3million from Nottingham Forest.

Reading FC complete Adrian Mariappa signing

The 22-year-old Wales international right-back could form part of a new-look back four at Madejski Stadium next season after becoming the third defender to join this summer.

He said: “If you form a team spirit, a togetherness, you’ll always do well in football – and if you work hard you’ll get your rewards.

“Reading have certainly done that in the last few years. Hopefully that can carry on. Right now, I need to focus on impressing everyone at this club and I’m really excited to get going.”

And as reported in getreading on Friday – Royals’ long-standing interest in 25-year-old centre-back Mariappa paid off after he agreed a three-year deal to leave Vicarage Road.

He said: “It was a hard decision to leave Watford because I’ve been there since I was nine years old and grew up at the club.”

Athletic, quick and strong in the air, Mariappa played 247 times for the Hornets after coming through the ranks at the Hertfordshire club where he was coached by Reading’s assistant manager Nigel Gibbs and development coach Chris Cummins.

“I also know Jobi McAnuff from his time at Watford,” continued the Jamaica international. “We have always kept in touch and I was really impressed with how Reading did last season.

“I know their defence with Kaspars Gorkss and Alex Pearce was one of the reasons that they won the Championship. I’m sure I will have a fight on my hands to break into the team, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

Who are we to even be commenting on whether Brian's finished yet?! Since when have the club been open about any potential dealings?

I'm assuming nobody caught SSN late last night/early this morning? They had SJM giving an interview in which he said McD still had time to assess his squad and if he came back from Portugal thinking he needed to strengthen then he would. He even refused to rule out anything like a potential Defoe-esc deal. That was from SJM! The man who in the last few seasons has been telling us the club have to "cut the cloth accordingly."

Look at it this way. Bar goalkeepers (although I know we have Taylor on trial) nearly every group of RFC's squad has seen atleast two signings. Four defenders, two midfielders and only one striker. Strikers probably being our weakest area in my opinion, given that for a promoted side not one of our strikers made the Championship's top scoring list last season. I'd say we need a striker and as Hammond has said, they might not move in this area until someone leaves. I was surprised to see Mills go out on loan and I'm equally surprised Jordan Rhodes is still a Huddersfield player...

Fordham, you really are a useless waste of space of a journalist. We are actively searching for another striker. Yet you believe word for word everything the club tell you.

At least two more will come in before the window closes.

All these signings are a far cry from the previous wheelings and dealings on deadline day. It's a breath of fresh air.

Have a great pre-season tour.

Another midfield player would be good to get. We have good signings for the first part of the season and then Jan transfer market will kick in and thats where you will see another two or three players come in strengthen the squad to cover injuries or suspensions.

These signings were very much needed, as IMO the squad was not strong enough for the prem league. I must congratulate NH and the team at RFC who have acted quickly and got in very good players with the right attributes for our current squad dynamics. I believe they will gel very quickly and the preseason will give them time to settle as a group. I would still like to see another striker added to the ranks....am I being greedy??! I am sure that there will now be some exiting the club as well - fringe players Tabb, Church, Antonio possible candidates here. Again if we could sign a 15-20 proven higher league goal scorer then we would definately have our icing on the cake....

I dont want to appear negative, all these signings are great news and exciting, but with so many new players, are they all going to be able gel together like a wel oiled machine ready for the new season ahead against very tough competition ?
