Reading FC on the brink of Premier League promotion

April 16, 2012

Reading boss Brian McDermott is still refusing to talk up the club's chances of winning promotion to the Premier League, despite the Royals only needing to better West Ham United's result tomorrow night to secure a return to the top flight.

Royals will return to the Premier League for the first time since 2008 should West Ham either lose or draw at Bristol City and McDermott's men avoid defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.

The game at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow night is a sell out.

Hopeful hoops is wrong - 4 points needed not 5 to be absolutely sure . We are 6 points ahead of West ham with 3 to play -westham can only get 9 more so can only ever go 3 points ahead if we lose all 3 .

4 points needed

Hopeful Hoops - 4 points is enough to take goal difference out of the equation. We are 6 points ahead of West Ham with 9 to play for. If we both get 3 tomorrow, then we are 6 points ahead with 6 to play for - so would only need 1 more point from the last two games to be promoted.

Just wish everyone - especially the media - would just drop all this chatter of promotion.

We are not promoted, nor anywhere near and although it is in our hands, football is full of shocks and anything is possible. It is still totally possible we can muck this up.

"Royals will return to the Premier League for the first time since 2008 should West Ham either lose or draw at Bristol City and McDermott's men avoid defeat at home to Nottingham Forest"

tokd29 - just to clarify the two paragraphs contradict each other - the second paragraph says that if West Ham lose or draw then we only need to avoid defeat. That means we could both draw, which wouldn't be enough for promotion.

Not really a big drama as we all know the maths anyway!

I'm more nervous now than I was Friday! I was convinced West Ham would lose to Brighton....a great prediction from myself!!

I think what was meant that IF West Ham lose and Reading draw tomorrow night then that's the Royals back in the big time!

We only need the magic mark of 5 points to be back there now and for every point West Ham drop, so does RFC's magic mark. I know everyone's been saying 4 points but in essence that's not enough. Given their result on Saturday West Ham and Saints have done enough to beat us on GD IF it was needed. Both have got tough games tomorrow. Bristol aren't safe and they gave away a 2-0 lead to Birmingham who did the same to WHU the game previous, so they're no push overs. Plus those who saw will know how good P'boro are at home when the Royals went there not so long ago. Southampton won't like it if they're as good against them as they were us.

Which would be bettering their result, as it says in the article...

The logic isn't correct in the article - if West Ham draw tomorrow, we need to win to be promoted rather than just avoid defeat.

Fantastic result on Friday night, but there is still work to be done. Exciting times though!
