McDermott: 'Fantastic' to have Noel Hunt back

Brian McDermott praised the returning Noel Hunt after the striker scored the only goal of the game at Blue Square Bet South outfit Farnborough.

Hunt, who missed the final six months of last season with a knee injury, bundled the ball over the line after Simon Locke’s goal kick had bounced over his opposing number Dominic Jean-Zephirin.

And McDermott admits it is a massive boost having the Republic of Ireland international back in contention.

He said: “Noel is a great character to have around the place and we said we would give him half an hour. Psychologically it is great for him to come and score a wining goal.

“He is an infectious character. Without the ball he goes after it. He is good in the air and is lively around the place – it’s fantastic to have him back.”

Reading came through the run out at Cherrywood Road relatively unscathed and goalkeeper Ben Hamer will travel with the rest of the squad to Slovenia today, despite picking up a groin injury,

McDermott added: “It was just about every player getting 45 minutes under their belts and that was the most important thing. They have done that and came through mostly unscathed. It has been a good workout.

“The pitch was a bit difficult at times and it was tough for our wide players to run with the ball. It was tough, but we have come out of here with a good run out.”
