Reading's Federici quashes Liverpool rumours

By Matthew Sadler

Adam Federici has pledged his immediate future to Reading after reports in a national newspaper linked him with a move to Liverpool.

The Australian stopper impressed in both FA Cup games against the Premier League side and his father was quoted as saying that he would be keen for his son to make such a switch.

But Federici is adamant his future lies at Madejski Stadium.

He said: “I have worked so hard to be No.1, why would I want to go up there, sit on the bench and start over? I’m enjoying my time as No.1 and I want to keep this up and go on from there.

“It has been quite interesting reading about myself, but I have had no contact from anyone.

“Some cheeky reporters back home don’t want to go about doing things the right way and rang my home – it was a bit of creative writing.

“I get paid to deal with the media, not my parents. The reporters were a bit out of order.

“I’m from a small town and if the local reporter rings up and has a casual conversation with my father it can go a bit pear-shaped.

“It’s good seeing your name in the paper and it is fantastic to be linked with a team like that, but I am a Reading player and am sure I will be for a long time.”

Royals were second best in the opening 45 mintues of Saturday’s

2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest and Federici admitted Reading could have been going into half-time 5-0 down.

He said: “We said before we never wanted a day like Plymouth again and it kind of had that feeling in the first half.

“It was credit to us that we showed we could have got back into the game and we should have.

“They are at the top of the table for a reason and they have great players.

“They had a lot of chances in the first half and we didn’t play very well. The second half we were a lot better and maybe we could have won it on another day.”

The 24-year-old denied that Reading’s poor start to the game was caused by fatigue from the Liverpool match and instead praised promotion-chasing Forest.

He said: “It’s always hard going again after playing for 120 minutes three days earlier, but we showed everyone how good we can be. That is the standard we have set oursevles for every game and we have to play up to that standard.

“The boys are all physically fit so that can’t be used as an excuse.

“They are up the top of the table at the moment and I would go as far as to say they are the best team in the league the way they are playing.

“In the second half we got back to how we played at Anfield and we have to keep that going.”
