Brendan Rodgers critical of the referee after Reading FC beaten by Derby County

By Jonny Fordham
November 28, 2009

Brendan Rodgers criticised referee Andy Haines after he saw his Reading side throw away three points at Derby County and striker Shane Long was shown a straight red.

Iceland under-21 Gylfi Sigurdsson fired Royals ahead with his second goal in as many games in the 56th minute, but their lead was short-lived thanks to a Paul Green equaliser just four minutes later.

The Ram’s experienced target-man Rob Hulse then put the game to bed in the 72nd minute after yet more confusion at the back in Royals’ box.

The defeat sees Rodgers’ side slip one place in the Championship table to 21st and they might be without Long for up to three games after his carding for lashing out at Frederik Stoor.

After the game Rodgers said: “It was a definite sending off and it was a poor tackle by Shane.

“In his defence though, the referee was poor because it was a free kick before, the defender has clearly fouled Shane and you can see that.

“When Shane went to clear the ball he catches his foot, which is disappointing as he was working well before that and put pressure on their back four.”

The 36-year-old manager was also disappointed at his side’s lapse in concentration to concede so quickly after they deservedly took the lead at Pride Park.

Rodgers continued: “When we went in front we were in control of the game, but after that we didn’t look very good.

“It was probably three points thrown away even though Derby is a difficult place to come to, but the two goals we conceded were very poor from our perspective.

“I don’t like to comment too much on the referee to be honest and would prefer to focus on my own players and our performance, but he wasn’t the best.

“We’re disappointed to lose, but I can’t be too disappointed over the last four games.”

Reading were also shocked by an injury to Brian Howard who may need an operation on a sus-pected broken jaw.

Derby’s disgraceful mascot Rammie the Ram should be sent straight to the slaughterhouse for his actions after goading the midfielder when he was flat out on the playing surface.

Rammie, however, regretted his actions after the game.

He told the Post: “I didn’t know how serious it was at the time and I would like to apologise to Brian Howard.”

Reading threw everything at Derby in the dying stages, but Clough’s side hung on to the points and move up into 16th place.

We are bgoing to take at least two years to blood the youngsters and bring in suitable experience. BR knows what needs to be done. Support the manager and the players - they are doing their best.

A win at Sheff Wed and all will be ok again.

AJR111-I accept your comments, but any good team must be built around a rock solid defence,or as near as you can get.Thats why Man City or Arsenal wont win anything in the forseeable future. How Wenger must miss the likes Adams,Bould,Winterburn etc.

southcoast - its not all about the goals or lack of,its also about the first line of defence is attack and unless they hold the ball up long enough then the midfield don't have the time to get forward and support, and on that note the strikers are supposed to hold the ball up to take the pressure off the defence, long and hunt will never be able to do this and rasiak isn't that type player either, church will be intime but still has a lot to learn, therefore they need to bring in someone who can.

Issues the manager has got is a chairman who is not supporting club in these hard times. I really hope soon JM can sell the club to a person who can see the full potential of the club and what it can offer the football premiership.

Why do most of the contributors to these pages keep "banging on" about the RFC strikers? In 8 games this season RFC have scored the opening goal, 3 they won,1 was a draw and 4 they went on to lose.Had the defence kept a clean sheet in the draw and 4 loses they would be up in the playoff places.Even in the 3 wins they let in a goal a game. The manager has issues to deal with and he should start with the defence.

Went to the game yesterday have not seen a ref so for the home team for a long time he was a disgrace. Long also a disgrace, yes he should have got a free kick but we could have got a draw if he had been more grown up and not played into the ref`s hands by doing a stupid tackle. Also Rodgers should have swopped Mcanuff and Kebe around a few times during the game.

I've run with BR, but the failings that were apparent in previous weeks (accepting we got the 'odd' win) remained yesterday. We don't seem to be moving on. Don't think he is motivating or creating the right spirit. He came to the club knowing SJM and Hammond and what they were like, and what the team was likely to be, so it is a bit late to return to that one. We need to start beating weak teams we get a bit of breathing space.

What are those calling for two strikers on the pitch going to do now? Thanks to Madejski's ridiculous cloth cutting the club only have two first team strikers available for selection for the next three games!

Madejski says he wants to sell the club but what he has done over the past few months is like putting his house up for sale, only to get someone to completely vandalise it before the first viewers come around!

if i did something on par in my job, i would get the sack, so take the opportunity and get shot of long on violent grounds, this will free up funds for a real player, after all he was only brought to the club to help doyle settle.

What standard of striker will they get? That is the question everyone should be asking the club, is it going to be some who is going to be on the cheap? Or a striker who has got some pedigree?

Brendan, whilst I totally agree with your comments about the ref who was at best useless (and missed everything Hulse etc). You must see that we need 2 strikers on the pitch to score more than once! Derby were there for the taking today, an easy 3 points...and I still can't believe we came away with nothing.

Also please, please, please stop playing Kebe, he is a liability (woeful game today)and needs to be dropped again. Perhaps you should consider giving James Henry a run in the team?!
