Icelandic ace Gylfi Sigurdsson has signed a new Reading contract keeping him a Madesjki Stadium until the summer of 2012.

The 20-year-old midfielder’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer and he has been rewarded with the new deal after starting in 11 of Royals’ 17 Championship games this season and scoring two league goals and one in the Carling Cup.

Icelandic Under-21 Sigurdsson, affectionately known as ‘The Sig’ amongst the fans, joined to Reading at the age of 14 and is one of three Icelandic players currently at the club.

He said: “I am delighted to sign because I’ve grown up with this club and to be here for another three years is great.

“I’ve come up from the under 18s, working with Eamonn Dolan and everybody in the Academy, then Steve Coppell and now Brendan Rodgers has given me my chance in the team.

“It’s all gone very well and now I want to help this club get into the Premier League.”

Sigurdsson is the second Academy graduate this yer to be handed a enw deal after winger James Henry was awarded earlier this month.

Director Of Football Nick Hammond added: “I’m delighted he has signed.

“We first brought him over as a schoolboy, we worked very hard to sign him back then because he has fantastic ability and a fantastic mentality.

“It’s very encouraging to now see him flourish and progress. He’s at the very start of his career, he is a very talented boy and can still go on from here.

“It’s an important signing from our point of view and also important for the Academy because it’s another player making his way into the team and then signing a new deal.”

To Gylfi; you are a great player and I'm pleased to hear you'll be sticking with the club for a few years. I wish you all the very best and have my fingers crossed that you will achieve your dream of helping Reading get back to the Premier League. Unfortunately, there will be downs (like today at Derby) as well as ups and you will always bounce back, put your best in and make both Reading FC and its fans pleased to have you.
