Icelandic trialist scores twice for Reading FC's reserves

Trialist striker Gunnar Thorvaldsson scored twice as Reading reserves beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 in a behind closed doors friendly today.

Manager Brendan Rodgers could tie up a deal for Thorvaldsson within the next 48 hours after running the rule over him for 10 days now.

Steve Coppell came close to signing the 27-year-old in 2005, but Thorvaldsson reckons Royals pulled out as he was too similar to Kevin Doyle.

"This is what I have been waiting for and hopefully a longawaited dream will now come true," Thorvaldsson told the Icelandic press when he arrived at Madejski Stadium.

"They thought I was too similiar to Kevin Doyle and they didn't see the need to get another player with the same attributes. But he has now moved on and hopefully I get the opportunity to fill his shoes."

Thorvaldsson scored his first goal against the Pirates after just five minutes and he went on to double his second just three minutes later, crashing a thumping 20-yard drive into the back of the net.

Shane Long and Chris Armstong both came through 90 minutes of action unscathed and attacking midfielder Radoslav Vasilev came off the bench for his first game in almost eight months.

Reading reserves: Hamer, Cummings, Armstrong, Cisse (Bell-Baggie), Mills, O'Dea, Robson-Kanu (MacDonald), Gunnarsson (Vasilev), Long, Thorvaldsson (Taylor), Bozanic.
