Brian Howard's 59th minute strike was enough to sink Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Friday evening.
Moments earlier Dave Kitson had hit the bar with a header, whilst Royals also had Kalifa Cisse stretchered off.
Former Royals Greg Halford and Darius Henderson came back to haunt Steve Coppell's side, linking up well to provide the chance for Howard after Matthew Kilgallon had fired his header against the crossbar.
Reading now face the long trip to Blackpool on Monday as they look to keep their promotion hopes alive.
