Mensah to make up for Royals disappointment

By Nick Ive
June 19, 2008

John Mensah has confirmed that he was on the brink of signing for Reading last year.

Steve Coppell first tried to land the Rennes defender with a £3.5million bid two years ago,
and Royals’ boss went back again for the 25-year-old Ghanaian last summer, but a proposed
move fell through.

Mensah, though, is still desperate to move to England and Portsmouth are now tipped to sign
him.

He said: “I can’t confirm it yet. I was due to move to Reading last season and I’m still
here. I feel good at Rennes, but my family are English-speaking and wish to live in
England.”

Meanwhile Royals may be tempted to make a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Ben Watson,
who has put in a transfer request. QPR, though, remain favourites to land the 22-year-old.

Sidwell

Ex-Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell is on the verge of clinching a £4.5million move to
Aston Villa.

He has made 13 starts for Chelsea since joining on a Bosman-style free transfer last
summer.

Reserves

Reading Reserves will play pre-season friendlies away at Basingstoke Town on
Saturday July 26 (3pm) and Maidenhead United on Tuesday July 29 (7.45pm).
