Marek is left stunned

Marek Matejovsky insists he is not looking to leave Reading following relegation to the Championship.

The Czech international midfielder has been left shattered by the club losing their Premier League status, but he  has revealed he does not have any escape clause in his contract.

“No (I never had such a clause) because I really did not expect we would go down,” Matejovsky told Czech-baed paper MF Dnes.

“I did not expect I would experience something like this at my first spell abroad. All the time I did not even suppose it could end like this.

“I don’t know at all what will happen in the future, I don’t see much into the club management. I believe though that they will want to return as soon as possible and I am sure we have the potential to achieve it.”

Reading suffered relegation on the final day of the season despite beating Derby 4-0.

But with Fulham beating Portsmouth, Steve Coppell’s men had to win by seven to avoid the drop.

“It (relegation) is a big blow,” admitted Matejovsky.

“I have not thought even in the worst dream that my first season abroad would end up with relegation. I really feel sad.

“We needed to score seven goals at Derby and we would have avoided the drop.

“Only three more goals and we were safe. We had plenty of chances to score them and no-one could have been surprised if we achieved that.

“I knew Fulham scored the goal. We were leading 3-0 at that moment, but I was not too much happy about that then. Anyway, I still believed that Portsmouth could score. Unfortunately, they did not.

“We needed to score seven goals at Derby and we would have avoided the drop.

“Unfortunately, they did not.”

Despite going down, Matejovsky insists he has loved his time in England so far.

He added: “It is a new experience for me. I have experienced life in a new country, have learned a new language and all the things around.”
