Penn & Tylers Green 1
FINCHAMPSTEAD extended their unbeaten run in Hellenic Division 1 East to three games following a confident victory over Penn & Tylers Green at the Memorial Ground.
Looking to build on recent results against Bracknell Town and Thatcham Town Res, Finch started on the back foot, but the visitors failed to capitalise on their early dominance, with keeper Neil Griffith watching a tame shot go wide.
The hosts soon found their rhythm and Scott Hunter narrowly failed to find Josh Sapsed with a cross before Penn keeper Matt Cannings beat Greg Alexander to a loose ball.
Alexander, however, was not to be denied a goal, as the centre forward secured his second strike in as many matches in the 34th minute.
Having robbed the visitors of possession, Scott Hunter played in Harry Swabey who, in turn, picked out Alexander with a fine cross at the far post, and he gave Cannings no chance with a fierce drive from close range.
Penn were only denied an immediate response following a fine piece of defending from Matt Wright, while another chance to level the scores moments later was thwarted by a fine stop from Griffith.
Josh Fox was then picked out from a corner, but was off target with his subsequent shot as the away side failed to yield a goal from a spell of possession.
Penn continued to enjoy more of the play as the half came to a close, but both Adrian Smith and Chris Hurst could only find Griffith’s stretched limbs before George Coyle tamely shot wide.
Finch rallied after the break and should have put further breathing space between themselves and the visitors, but Cannings intervened to deny Swabey a sniff at goal when he was put through by Alexander.
And with both goals leading a charmed life, it was Finchampstead who went on to extend their lead in the 62nd minute courtesy of a fine individual finish from Sapsed.
Having received the ball from Swabey on the halfway line, the midfielder advanced forward before calmly beating Cannings with a tidy strike.
With momentum now on their side, Finch added a third seconds later, with Sam Green hammering home from close range following good work between Luke Axton-Hall and Steve Ryan from a corner.
Griffith was robbed of the chance to record a clean sheet when Johnny Feaver grabbed a consolation goal eight minutes from time.
The No.1 then had to parry away a swerving effort from Chris Hurst as Penn went in search of an unlikely comeback, but Finch held out to record only their home win of the season.
