Penn & Tylers Green FC 1 Woodley Town FC 4

August 13, 2012

It was a day of firsts in Woodley's opening game of the Hellenic Division 1 East season, with captain Jordan Tallett netting his first goal for the club, while strikers Darrell Fairbrother and Ben Lyden scored on their debuts as Town deservedly took the points.

In a largely scrappy match, it was Town who created the best chances, with the pace of Lyden, Fairbrother and another debutant Danny Garrard causing the home team’s three-man defence problems.

Penn’s Chris Hurst had already hit the post with a free-kick when Tallett headed home from a corner on 10 minutes to give Woodley the lead.

A timely tackle by Mitch Cooper in the penalty area prevented Hurst from shooting three minutes later as Penn began to take more control, equalising on 33 minutes through the lively Liam Ratcliffe.

The opening 10 minutes of the second half was an end-to-end affair, with Ratcliffe twice going close for Penn.

For Town, Jamie Fairchild had a shot blocked, while Cooper fired straight at home keeper John Harding.

The introduction of Garrard to Town’s right flank early in the half turned the game in their favour, but it wasn't until six minutes from the end that they finally found a goal, with Fairbrother turning home a low Garrard cross.

Two minutes later Fairbrother could have extended the lead when one on one with Harding, but the keeper was able to block the effort.

However, Lyden got the killer goal as the match entered stoppage time when he reacted first to Harding’s block, while Fairchild completed the scoring three minutes into stoppage time when he drove home from the edge of the penalty area following another Garrard cross.

Town now look forward to Tuesday evening’s visit to Didcot Town Res, who also scored four away goals in their opening fixture at Henley Town.

Woodley Town: Smith, Sesay, Cooper, Fairbrother, Tallett, Thomas, Godwin (Garrard), Fairchild, Lyden, Donegan (Hiscock), Simms (Edwards), Subs not used: Stubbs
