Finchampstead FC 2 Newbury FC 1
April 23, 2012
Finchampstead finished the Hellenic Division 1 East season on a high with two wins in four days.
Having beaten Milton United 3-1 on Wednesday, they then took three points from champions Newbury at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.
Finch made a positive start, but it was Newbury who had the best chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot, only Darren Jones' spot kick to be saved at full stretch by Neil Griffith.
Dan Willis had the best of Finch's opportunities, with an angled shot which sailed across the face of the Newbury goalmouth and a shot which went over Newbury keeper Simon Digweed’s crossbar.
The home side did break the deadlock three minutes before the break, though, as Richard Kell received a pass from Kylo Atkinson and his low shot beat Digweed.
However, a swift Newbury counter-attack seven minutes after half-time allowed the visitors to pull level as Callum Willmoth scored.
But scarcely had the game restarted when Finch restored their lead as a one-touch passing move was finished off by Atkinson.
Kell and Atkinson went close to adding to Finch's advantage, while Jeff Kalejaiy fired over for Newbury.
Under severe pressure, it seemed Finch would soon buckle as a Newbury goal seemed inevitable.
But when Kalejaiy was shown his second yellow card, for diving in the area, it seemed their chances were dead and buried.
Sam Green, however, was still required to clear another Newbury effort off the goal as Finch held on to earn the win which secured seventh position in the table - their highest position for eight years.
