Letcombe FC 1 Finchampstead FC 0
April 10, 2012
Finchampstead suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Letcombe, despite having the lion's share of possession and dominating the chances in their Hellenic Division 1 East tie in west Berkshire.
In blustery conditions, Finch were camped in the home half for the opening stages and really should have gone in front.
Stewart Manicom hit both the post and bar for Finch, while Dan Willis, Gavin Rolls, Matt Wright and Chris Hollis also should have done better.
After that, Letcombe had their fair share of possession and control in midfield and went ahead when Lyle Gifford fired a diagonal shot from some distance past the reach of Neil Griffith and into the top corner in the 27th minute.
Finch piled on the pressure in the second half and kept Letcombe busy throughout.
And although the equaliser wasn't forthcoming, boss Jon Laugharne admits he is not concerned by the lack of killer instinct in front of goal.
"They had one shot on goal and scored," he said.
"We hit the bar, the post, their keeper made some great saves and we had a stupid amopunt of corners.
"The wind did make it quite hard, but on another day we we would have won the game quite comfortably.
"It was a similar story at Rayners Lane last week – we had nine or 10 very good attempts at goal, hit the bar and the post, but they scored from two set pieces.
"It’s not that worrying because we’re not playing badly.
"Our results have been ionconsistent, but we haven’t been playing badly.
"We’re not going into games and getting hammered and being up against it for the whole match.
"We’re playing okay and if we continue to do that then I’m sure we’ll be fine."
