Slimbridge FC 5 Bracknell Town FC 1By Darrell Freeland

Bracknell Town came away from high-flying Slimbridge on the wrong end of a 5-1 score line, but the Hellenic Premier Division match was a much closer affair than the score suggested.
It was always going to be a tough ask, not helped by late withdrawals due to work commitments and injuries, so the makeshift Robins lined up with striker Josh Morrison and winger Harvey Muddyman partnering Dan Sleet in the backline.
Slimbridge opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Muddyman and Adam McNamara failed to clear and Karl Nash’s deflected shot gave Chris Adams no chance.
Sam Barratt had a free-kick tipped over, while Joe Richards was unlucky not to find the target as Bracknell recovered well.
Mike Bryant should have doubled the lead as he raced in and slotted past Adams, but his effort rolled agonisingly wide of the post.
However, new signing McNamara equalised in first-half stoppage time, reacting quickest to fire into the roof of the net after Ben Knight’s shot was blocked.
Rob Hine put Bridge ahead in the 67th minute, although Bryant appeared to control the ball with his arm before squaring to Hine, much to the annoyance of the visitors.
Substitute Jamie Martin helped himself to two quickfire goals with more than a hint of offside as he headed in his first.
His second was pure class as under a spell of pressure from Bracknell, the hosts countered at a lightning pace and Martin slotted home to finish a good team move, making the score 4-1.
If the current score was harsh on the Robins, it got worse in stoppage time with a fifth goal from the penalty spot.
Barratt and Martin tangled in the area and although Adams saved Martin’s penalty and then Leon Cornwall’s follow up, Hine was on hand to finish at the third attempt.
It was agony for the patched up away side who battled bravely, but didn’t get the rewards to match their efforts.
The Robins face two home games now as Thame United and Holyport visit Larges Lane this coming Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off) and Saturday (3pm) respectively.
