Two second-half goals moved Binfield up to second spot as they dispatched newly-promoted Thame United on Monday night.

The first half was a very tense affair, with neither side creating a clear-cut opportunity, although Thame had a good penalty appeal turned down.

Binfield, however, opened the scoring midway through the second half.

James Suarez produced a stunning pass to James Rogers and the winger expertly controlled the ball and beat his man in one movement.

However, as he cut into the area, he was dragged back by Steve Newell, the referee pointed to the spot, and Carl Davies stepped up to bury his ninth goal of the season.

Binfield went on to seal the points when Davies crossed for Rogers whose shot rebounded off the post and fell to Suarez who calmly slotted home.

And after grounding out victory against an impressive side, boss Mark Tallentire believes he saw a different edge to his side.

“Some of the boys were a bit disappointed not to be winning at half-time, but I had to explain that you can’t expect to be winning every game at half time,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to be able to grind out a result and that was the platform for our second half performance.

“We probably shaded the second half, but it could have gone either way and the game was always in the blance.

“Thame really impressed me and they are a good side who will take points off a lot of the top teams this season.”

“Our central defensive pair of Ryan Millward and Dave Fenton were absolutely fantastic and I don’t think they lost a header – that was very pleasing.”
