Wokingham & Emmbrook started their pre-season programme with a narrow defeat at Hungerford on Saturday.
With players still on holiday several of the new faces were not on show, but Wokingham produced an excellent performance that had manager Wayne Wanklyn praising his side.
“This was a very pleasing performance against a very good footballing side,” he said.
“This was a good workout against a Southern League side. We worked hard all afternoon and I am extremely pleased with our fitness at this stage of the build up to the new season.”
The first half saw Hungerford enjoy more early possession, although a Richard Bland effort just skimmed the bar.
At the other end, Wokingham’s 16-year-old keeper Reece O’Connor made a couple of fine saves to deny Dave Arker and Anthony Alleyne.
In the 23rd minute O’Connor spread at the feet of the Alleyne and had to be rushed to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone.
With no sub keeper physio and goalkeeping coach Dan Bateman donned the jersey.
Manager Wanklyn made a couple of changes during the interval with James Rumsby and Luke Lee replacing Alex Luis and Shane Cooper-Clark.
Wokingham came more into it in the second period, although their best chance came when Chris Howell fired high and wide from a corner.
Some of Wokingham’s football was first class and they threatened on a couple of occasions.
At the other end Bateman looked more than comfortable in goal and made good saves from Arker, Romeo and Ryan Crockford.
Bland tested Ben Foster at the other end moments before the home side scored in the 78th minute as Jamie Leacock’s cross from the right was met by Dave Arker from close in.
Wokingham tried to hit back, with Bland firing just wide after Howell and Mick Davies had combined. However, it was an excellent overall performance that caught the eye against a full-strength Hungerford first team.
Next up for Wokingham & Emmbrook are Ryman League side Chalfont St Peter on Saturday at Cantley Park (12.15pm kick-off).
Then on Tuesday they travel to Bisley FC to face Combined Counties side Frimley (7pm kick-off).

— Wokingham Reserves lost 3-1 to a strong Hungerford outfit before the two club’s home sides met.
