Wokingham & Emmbrook crashed of the Blue Fin Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup at rain-sodden Wantage on Tuesday.
Wokingham were given a stark lesson of what life in the Hellenic Premier Division will be like if promotion is gained in April.
Despite Wantage being one of the top sides in the league, for an hour Wokingham gave a good account of themselves, defending well and looking capable on the break and the 7-2 scoreline was probably a little harsh on the visitors.
In fact they took the lead in the 25th minute when from just inside the area Shane Cooper-Clark brilliantly curled a shot just inside the post.
However the home side were level three minutes later when Wokingham failed to clear and Matt Biddle scored from close in.
The home side took the lead in time added on when Gary Swan turned in a corner.
Wokingham stated the second half brightly, but Danny Keen’s brilliant looping effort from 35 yards sailed over Stuart Harris’ head to essentially put the game out or reach.
Wokingham failure to deal with crosses in the second half cost them dearly and on the hour Ellis Langford jumped unchallenged to head home a corner.
Wokingham pulled it back to 4-2 a couple of minutes later when Bland turned cleverly to see his goalbound shot helped over the line by Tom Rowe.
But it was all over from another corner in the 75th minute as Keen rose to head home.
Home substitute Liam McCullough made it 6-2 in the 78th minute, again from a cross, but despite the scoreline Wokingham still battled away manfully.
With 10 minutes remaining the scoring was complete when Tom Austin tapped in from yet another cross.
Manager Wayne Wanklyn wasn’t too disheartened, however.
“I thought we defended quite well for an hour or so against a very good side,” he said.
“Their midfield was quite a handful and their movement caused us problems at times.
“I thought we worked hard all evening, but it showed we have a lot of hard work to do, especially from crosses.
“We will be working hard on this during training.”
