After last week’s morale-boosting win at Didcot, Finchampstead faced stronger opposition as Rayner’s Lane visited the Memorial Park in Hellenic Division 1 East.

In an evenly-contested matched, it was the Londoners who made the early running, with Finch defenders Scott Bursill and Tom Hopper having to be on their guard.

Rayners Lane had a header by Dean Ryan rebound off the framework, but Finch did likewise as Junior Arquimbau tried his luck with a shot which rattled the crossbar.

Pat Selby almost opened teh scoring when he went on a weaving run through the Rayners Lane defence, but his shot went narowly over.

Rayners Lane had their chances as well, with an Andy Forbes header finding the side netting, while Finch’s Ben Knight had a long shot that was comfortably saved by James Christian.

The deadlock was finally broken  on 38 minutes sent a cross into the box which Pat Selby turned into the net from close quarters.

Two more attempts by Arquimbau and Matt Wright couldn’t produce a second, while Dean McFarlane curled a shot into Perry Howard’s arms.

After a good start to the second half, Rayners Lane pulled level when Ryan broke clear and slid the ball under Howard.

The rest of the game was a fairly intense battle, but neither side could make the breakthrough for the all-important winning goal.

Finchampstead: Howard, Wright, Carter, Bursill, Hopper, Prentice, Arquimbau, S. Selby, P. Selby, Knight, Wyatt. Subs: Ryan Merritt, Willis.
