'Town club should be in town'

October 09, 2009

President of Wokingham and Emmbrook Football Club, Mark Ashwell,  is dismayed by the prospect of having to move out of the borough.

He says the park would not be solely dedicated to the club and points to Wokingham Theatre, which has a building on Cantley Park.

The final whistle for Cantley Park?

“Wokingham Theatre has been able to build at Cantley, and that is a community pursuit like ours.

“We are facing a situation where the town’s very successful football club’s premier team may be forced to play at a ground not in Wokingham.

“This is not ideal, particularly considering the many hours people at the club, who give their time voluntarily, have put into getting the Cantley Park bid right.

Cantley Park - years of controversy

“The club has kept the council fully aware of what terms of use it wants at Cantley Park and spent many hours talking to officers about the lease it needs to sign in order to go ahead with the Football Foundation bid.

“We do not want to abandon the town, the town football club should be in Wokingham.

“We are faced with a frustrating situation where if we do not get the pitch up to standard, we will have to seek alternatives outside the borough, in places like Windsor.”

He added: “Our premier team should be the pride of the town. Wokingham and Emmbrook Football Club provides a vital community service to Wokingham, offering a fun social and active facility to hundreds of children.

“The club needs the support of the council to continue providing this very important facility .”
