South Kilburn FC 1 Finchampstead FC 1By Richard Whitchurch-Bennett
April 30, 2009
Travelling without influential young striker Ben Knight, Finchampstead FC visited South Kilburn FC with high hopes of grabbing three points.
However, a strong wind, coupled with a rock hard and bumpy pitch, made the game something of a lottery.
Danny Isaiew should have put Finch in front after five minutes when through on goal, while a few minutes later Tom Hopper was denied by goalkeeper Christopher Christie.
Kilburn, though, always threatened, and strikers Scott Lewis and Scott Nelmes both went close before Isaiew again missed the target in a one-on-one situation with Christie.
Nick Rumsby then made two magnificent saves, firstly denying Lewis in the 23rd minute, before parrying a point-blank effort from Nelmes four minutes later.
It was Finch, though, who took the lead on the half hour when Bobby Hogg’s free-kick was volleyed home by Tom Hopper to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Kilburn then enjoyed a good period of possession and attacking football, with the Finch defence looking stretched at times as it tried to cope with the long ball that weaved in the gusting wind.
This attacking play was eventually rewarded in the 40th minute when a cross was met by the unmarked Scott Lewis, whose snap shot thundered against the inside of the left-hand post before slowly curling wind-assisted over the goalline before Nick Rumsby could react.
Finch had the lion’s share of the second-half possession, but never seemed likely to score as again they failed to capitalise on a number of created chances, causing frustration to creep into the side.
Robert Yorke-Goldney had the best of the chances for the visitors after the break, while Isaiew once again failed to convert from close range.
