Prestwood FC 0 Finchampstead FC 2By Arthur Strand
March 26, 2009
Finchampstead FC cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Prestwood FC in their latest Hellenic Division 1 East clash.
Goals from Dean Thomas and Tom Hopper secured the visitors victory in a match they dominated from start to finish.
Finch were first into their stride, and it was to prove a familiar pattern for the remainder of the game. Thomas collected a through pass early on, and his strike from the edge of the penalty area flew past Dan Little in the Prestwood goal to open the scoring.
Soon after, Thomas’ through ball released Danny Isaeiw. He saw his shot deflected out for a corner, though Little had no problem dealing with it. Finch were in control of the midfield exchanges from the beginning, with Thomas again allowed to shoot from distance.
This time his effort flew harmlessly over the bar.
Prestwood posed little threat to the Finchampstead defence, with the occasional foray into their territory leading to nothing.
It wasn’t long before Hopper rose highest from a corner, only to put his header the wrong side of the post.
Chances continued to come Finch’s way, with Isaiew and Thomas involved in a terrible mix-up when it seemed easier to score.
Prestwood were pegged back into their half as Thomas and Hopper continued to unleash a flurry of efforts at goal, with both guilty of failing to hit the target on numerous occasions.
As half-time approached, Finch’s pressure seemed destined to pay off with a second goal.
Having received possession in the area, Isaiew squared the ball for Thomas, only to see his effort sail over the crossbar from just a couple of yards out.
After the break, Finch were again on the offensive and a goalmouth scramble resulted in a Prestwood defender clearing off the line.
When the home side finally broke clear through Danttia Grey-Ward, the retreating Kevin Prentice hauled him down to earn himself a yellow card from referee Mr. Parbery.
Hopes of a comeback from the home side were dashed on the hour mark, as Hopper collected the ball before rounding Little and slotting into an empty net.
Frustration began to set in for the hosts, as Adam Burrows was sent off for a nasty tackle on Finch skipper Scott Bursill.
The tackle resulted in the captain suffering a game-ending ankle injury, with Steve Ryan replacing him.
Numerous chances fell Thomas’ way as the afternoon wore on, but he was again unable to finish.
A late flourish from Prestwood saw their only meaningful effort from Liam Doyle fly over from close range.
The victory was sealed long before though, and perhaps the only disappointment for Neil White’s side was their inability to convert more of their chances.
