Finchampstead 1 Thame United 2
Finchampstead suffered a nightmare loss to Thame United on Saturday, dragging them right into the midst of the Hellenic Division 1 East relegation battle.
Chances were few and far between in the first half with neither goalkeeper severely tested in an extremely tight encounter.
However, disaster struck for Finch early in the second half as keeper Nick Rumsby dived full stretch to save a mis-hit Tom Hopper back-pass, only for the referee to award an indirect free-kick right on the edge of the area.
The ensuing free kick by Nick Rhodes was deflected off the wall and passed the Finch keeper to open the scoring.
Finch went on the offensive, and from one foray into the box, made a claim for handball.
The referee consulted his linesman and awarded the penalty, which was duly converted by Danny Isaiew.
Both sides went searching for the winner, but it was Thame that were to make the decisive breakthrough 10 minutes from time as Luke Ricketts was in the right place at the right time to prod the ball home.
Finch searched hard for the equaliser, but it was to no avail as they slumped down to 13th in the table ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Chinnor.
