Bracknell Sunday League Refs boost

By Adam Lee

With the FA launching the ‘Respect The Ref’ campaign this summer, Bracknell & District Sunday League can be proud in the fact that it is reversing the national trend.

Referees across the country are leaving in their droves due to the pressure heaped on them and the abuse they can come in for from players, maangement and supporters at the weekends.

However, the Bracknell Sunday League has actually seen referees return this season, with fixture secretary Mick White able to appoint an official to almost every game so far this season.

“There’s such a shortage of referees nationally at the moment, but we’ve had two or three referees return to us,” said White.

“We’ve had two games without a ref so far this season so we’re covering 99 per cent of our matches.”

Let us hope the trend continues and the Bracknell Sunday League can continue to operate with a full quota of refs for the rest of this season and many more to come.

Having now refereed three games in the Bracknell Sunday League this season, and hundreds over the previous years, this season has so far been brilliant, I am enjoying being able to officiate with teams willing to co-operate with me and obviously wanting to enjoy themselves. I believe that the rrespect campaign will always be more difficult to manage at this level but we as referee's need to be part of the change and things will only continue to improve, the six teams I have officiated have been great and thanks to all of them. I hope the future continues. We as referee's will make mistakes, players will make mistakes, we are all human. However the Referee will not slate a player when he does so the players need to refrain from slating the referee who will never cheat but will make an HONEST mistake. Thanks to all and keep it up
