Town centre revamp: ‘more action needed’

By Hugh Fort
May 29, 2009

Traders have cautiously welcomed news on the future of Wokingham town centre but still say more is needed.

Wokingham Borough Council has now cut a list of potential developers for the regeneration of the town from 88 to five.

Town centre traders say they are pleased with the news, which follows months of uncertainty after the council fell out with Peach Street landowner Rock Investment Group.

But they are now demanding short-term action to spruce up Wokingham and keep shoppers visiting while behind-the-scenes talks over the revamp are ongoing.

And the role of the Wokingham Town Centre Forum, which was set up to get people to plug ideas about what they wanted to see in the new town centre, could now change.

Councillor Matt Deegan, community regeneration boss, said the forum could be used to generate short-term improvements in the town centre.
