Pal takes on peak feat in memory of Chris Pickett

A sports fanatic is scaling new heights as he attempts to climb Africa’s highest peak in memory of much-loved Earley barman Chris Pickett.

Matthew Charge admitted he will be pushed to his mental and physical limits when he takes on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The 21-year-old fitness trainer is embarking on the mammoth seven-day challenge as a tribute to his close friend Chris, who became well known in the town during his time behind the pumps at Castle Street bar Dogma.

Matthew, of High Tree Drive in Lower Earley, has already raised £4,050 for Daisy’s Dream, a charity which helped Chris’s family cope with his death last May.

“I knew Chris for 16 years and he was one of the greatest friends I have ever had,” he said.

“Whatever he was doing he always had time for everybody and could light up a room with his cheeky smile.

“I felt the need to give him something back as he always did so much for everybody else.

“So I decided to help Daisy’s Dream as they have given Chris’s family fantastic support after going through such a tragic loss.”

During the climb from March 19 to 26, Matthew will battle through scrubland, tropical rainforests and snow while facing the real prospect of altitude sickness.

The former Bulmershe School pupil has been preparing with 18-mile treks through the Surrey countryside.

“It’s an inspiring sort of challenge, though Chris would probably say ‘Why are you doing this, you nutter?’” he added.

Vickie Randall, fundraising manager at Daisy’s Dream, said: “Matthew’s determined to make a positive contribution to Chris’s memory and through his challenge will help more young people receive support through the loss of someone close to them. We wish him lots of luck.”
