Shute End opens one-way ahead of schedule

By Jon Nurse
March 14, 2013

Shute End has re-opened one-way this morning.

Motorists can travel from Reading towards Wokingham as water mains replacement works continue.

Shute End closed last Monday as was expected to remain shut until Monday, April 1.

Last month Broad Street was closed as part of the £2 million project and re-opened four weeks ahead of schedule.

Damiano yes a new main has to be flushed to remove air and to make sure the main is clean of any small debris ,once this has been achieved samples are taken to be tested for quality before the main is put into commission , cant say i saw any new large cracks there today , but then the road surface there is not that good anyway , if there had been any suitable drains near by i think it would have been routed directly down them ;-)

Shute End needs to be one way. There are people who work there who should leave and not return!
Wokingham could be sooo much better

Hey diggerman. How does that work, 'airing out'; do you have to flush a certain amount of water through the new pipe to get rid of any remaining particles, or something?

I know, we do get rain quite a bit; but the water is pouring down a slope, and a number of large cracks have appeared exactly where the water is flowing. And the cracks and potholes we see in winter, aren't they started by water flowing, freezing, expanding and pooling?

@getWokingham - why, thank you. I'm honoured to get a personal response. I feel quite chuffed.

@william richards , how would they do this when the only route in the first part of shute end was down the centre of the road ,the possibility of 44 tons passing close the the edge of a trench that could be up tp 2 metres deep certainly would not fill me full of joy

@damiano tommassi

i think you will find that is to "air out" the new main before testing for water quality you can,t just send it all into the system and its hardly going to damage the road after all it rains quite a bit here :-)

@Mavdo thanks for your comments. The Plough Lane story was in Wednesday's Wokingham Times and is on our news page of getwokingham. It has now been added to the homepage.

Try 'All Saints'. Stupid fat fingers.

I now hear that they will close Plough Lane from 25th March for two months!!! That's gonna suck big time.

@getWokingham - why would the Plough Lane story be on getBracknell, but not getWokingham. It IS in Wokingham you know.

Gotta give them credit for the speed. Perhaps sack the person estimating it :)

I see they are repairing the leak by All Saibts Church finally too.

Is there still an exposed pipe, with a bit of hose, spewing water out 24/7, seemingly damaging the road? It had been there for the last week.
