Fire crew called to pub chimney fire

By Laura Herbert
March 12, 2013

Firefighters have advised people with chimneys or open fires to make sure they are regularly swept.

A crew from Wokingham were called to Ye Olde Leather Bottle pub, in Barkham Road, at around 3.40pm on Tuesday.

The pub was evacuated and the fire extinguished by staff by the time the crew arrived.

Firefighters spent around an hour at the scene putting out the remainder of the fire in the chimney.

Neil Polding, watch manager, said: "Our advice is to properly sweep at least twice a year around September to October and in April to May.

"However, if it is being used on a regular basis, we recommend an interim sweep."
