mavdo , resurfacing of a road only usually involves a thing layer of wearing course which is machine laid and cools fairly quickly , i think you will find they went down the centre of broad street as that was the only clear route ,you have to take into account existing watermains , gas mains ,high voltage elecrtic , low voltage electric , BT cables ,CATV cables ,sewer pipes ,storm water pipes etc plus all the individual feeds to each property , footpaths would be a certain no go ,first off no room , second keeping access to shops ,house,s for members of the public ,if you see the only route they have to take down the first narrow part of shute end ,you can see why it is closed ,perhaps when they get nearer to the council office end it is wider and they may be able to keep over to allow traffic one way ,but at the end of the day safety is paramount for the public and the workers

It ewally is time for Wokingham council to take charge of the operation and dictate to the water companies road closure periods. Seems the water companies are being allowed a free hand to the detriment of Wokingham residents and traders.

@diggerman - true, I don't, and I accept the need to accommodate residents by not being overly noisy at night, plus the need to give conrete time to set (although resurfacing of main roads seems to be able to be completed overnight). I also accept that you probably know more than I in how it all works. But having see the work they've done in Station Road, Peach Street and Broad Street, there really was no need to completely close the road for the entire period, and one reason they closed it as they did is because they continnually dug the hole down the middle of the road. If it goes wrong, they'll need to completely close the road again. If they put the pipe in a different place, only one lane would need to be closed.

On this basis, it seems to me that they've decided to close Shute End because it is easier to do so, not because they actually really need to. To do something because it is easier for them, but really really bad for businesses, commuters, residents and shoppers, is just wrong.

This is the third time they've dug up Shute End in 12 months, and no doubt they are already digging through the concrete they poured in last time. How is that any good?

I don't have the knowledge of the best way of doing all this, accepted. But do those with the knowledge really believe that they are doing this in the best interest of locals and local businesses, or is this just easiest for them and sod everyone else?

@ mavdo , no offence but you obviously have no knowledge of digging in the road , at night , great for the residents with a hydraulic hammer going for hours concrete will need 24/48 hours to cure ,then the blacktop ,the only clear route could well be down the middle of the road ,as was the case with broad street stop and speak to the workers ,they will expain things to you

It makes me laugh, Broad Street was closed both ways for weeks, but they could have opened up one side for a contraflow to relieve traffic.

This weekend both lanes were clear but close for cars.

The double yellows down Holt Lane should remain as permanent.

And I hear reports that WBC have decided that now is the best time to repaint the lines on the very road down which they are diverting all the traffic. Absolute GENIUS.

The signs say 4 weeks, the no parking by Holt school say 3 weeks, and the paper says 2 weeks... who has the right answer. The usual disorganisation.

I don't see the need to close it completely for so long. A complete closure overnight or at weekends, maybe, along with partial closures at other times, closing one lane and diverting traffic the wrong way up broad street and down rose street, with traffic lights at the bottom maybe? Diverting traffic up past Holt school for a month is nuts.
