Toast to former mayor to celebrate New Year's Honour

By Jon Nurse
February 26, 2013

A jubilant toast was offered to a former borough mayor as a village society celebrated her place in the the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Proud members of Hurst Village Society presented Annette Drake with a card containing pictures of the village at The Castle Inn on Thursday, January 31.

Mrs Drake, an ex-borough councillor, founder and president of the society, will receive the British Empire Medal for public and voluntary service to the community in Wokingham, later this year.

Councillor Wayne Smith delivered a speech to members of the society and Hurst Parish Council praising Mrs Drake for decades of service to the borough.

Mrs Drake, who is in her 70s, has two sons and four grandchildren and moved to Rose Street, Wokingham, last year after living in Hurst for 45 years.
