Bones discovered under Friar Street

Bones have been found under Friar Street as workmen were looking for the cause of a major crack in the road surface.

They unearthed a collapsed Victorian clay sewer pipe a metre and a half underground.

Then they stopped work to call the police when they uncovered some old bones.

Reading Borough Council spokesman Oscar Mortali said: "The council is now in contact with Thames Water to establish whether the pipe can be dug up. We apologise to bus passengers for the temporary inconvenience caused by these emergency works which are expected to last up until Friday.

"On digging up the road the council’s workers also discovered what appeared to be some old bones underground.

"Early indications suggest the bones were horse, pig, bovine and possibly goat. The workmen also turned up what appeared to be the soles of 12th Century shoes.

"The council called Thames Valley Police to investigate further and they have now confirmed they are satisfied the site is of no further interest to them.

"An archaeological specialist is now on site carrying out further investigative works. Council works are continuing further along Friar Street while this is happening."

Friar Street was closed on Monday to try to establish the cause of dangerous cracking to the road surface.

Horse, pig, bovine, goat we still cant tell the difference. Whats new!! Surely the "soles" should have gone to heaven!!

Does anyone remember Spitting Image in the late 80s ? They had a sketch of Dan Quayle in Space, looking for his brain. Well, maybe this is Rob Wilson's brain, and that he hasn't managed to find it, in between all his toadying to businesses with the former chief whip, and considering the dead DJ, Jimmy Savile ?

It's Tesco again. I saw an employee digging around there just before the cracks appeared. Burying the evidence of those horses I expect.

Well, this is exciting! According to the BBC these could be bones from a "horse, pig, cattle or goat"! And there's more! There could be "Soles of shoes dating back to about the 12th Century."

I need to lie down. Bloody Leicester.
