Little Explorer Ella is a library starBy Julie Spencer

A three-year-old who borrowed more than 300 library books in one year is the first young reader to collect all 10 Little Explorers Book Club certificates.
The scheme, run by Wokingham Borough Libraries, encourages under-fives and their parents to use libraries more often.
It was created in March with local author Cathy MacLennan who created the monkey images for the certificates, collectors’ cards and posters.
In the first six months of the scheme 653 Little Explorers have joined, of which 394 were new library members.
Ella and her parents Vicki and Phil Scordis were congratulated by borough mayor Cllr Bob Wyatt and library officer Clare Groves, reader development officer Elizabeth McDonald and Cathy MacLennan.
Mrs Scordis said: “We love coming to the library and getting our star stamp when we borrow our books. The Little Explorers Book Club scheme has been a wonderful experience for Ella that will definitely encourage her to keep on reading.”
To take part each child needs to have their own library card, and they collect a stamp each time they borrow books. Once they collect six stamps they get one of 10 limited edition certificates .
Richard Alexander, head of Wokingham Borough Libraries, said: “We know learning to read is a hugely important part of a child’s development, and libraries are uniquely placed to support this.
“We are really pleased to have been able to work with a popular children’s illustrator and author from within our own community to develop this scheme, which we hope will encourage parents to explore what opportunities we can offer their children.”
