Hundreds of children receive presents due to Wokingham Times Giving Tree appealBy Laura Herbert

There were smiles all around on Christmas morning as hundreds of children opened presents bought by kind-hearted The Wokingham Times readers for this year’s Giving Tree Appeal.
Generous shoppers dug deep, despite tough economic times, and bought presents for children across the borough who may not have received a gift this year. Tags have been flying off the Giving Trees, which were placed in businesses across the borough, and a huge 1,000 present were donated – beating last years total of around 700 gifts.
Co-ordinator Gill McKernan, of the Barnardo’s children’s charity, which runs High Close School in Wiltshire Road, said: “This year’s appeal has once again been a resounding success, generating hundreds of presents.
“I haven’t been able to count them all but I think that the number must be nearing the 1,000 mark.
“I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who have bought a gift for a needy child this Christmas when times are difficult enough for themselves in this present economic climate.
“The thought and care taken in choosing such lovely presents has brought tears to my eyes and I know their kindness will go a long way to make a child know there is someone else who cares about them this Christmas.
“I am sure all the children would like to thank them personally but as this is not possible, please accept my heartfelt thanks on their behalf.”
Mrs McKernan added: “I would also like to thank all the firms who hosted a Giving Tree and who were kind enough to take in the gifts from their staff and the general public and store them until I was able to collect them.
“I was always greeted with a smile by such lovely helpful people.
“I also want to thank Transform Housing who helped collect the gifts and offered their premises a storage and collection point.
“All the charities benefiting from the appeal have asked me to pass on their gratitude to everyone involved. You have all made such a difference to a child this Christmas.
“On everyone’s behalf I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas a happy and healthy New Year.”
