Ollie Young's favourite song sung at charity fundraiser

December 21, 2012

An arrangement of Ollie Young’s favourite pop song was performed at a carol concert to raise funds for the charity set up in his memory.

The One Direction hit What Makes You Beautiful was sung by children from musical theatre school Platform YP with accompaniment from clarinet players The Livas Quartet and conducted by Stephen Willis, director of music at The Abbey School in Reading.

The boys from One Direction, who are ambassadors for the Rays of Sunshine charity, had sung the song to Ollie when they visited him at his Woosehill home in January.

Ollie died in February and his parents Simon and Sarah set up the Ollie Young Foundation to raise money for research into brain tumours.

Karen Ayton, who plays with the quartet and wrote the arrangement, organised the concert at St Paul’s Church, Wokingham, on Sunday December 9.

She said: "I really enjoyed the afternoon; it was worth all the hard work. The Platform children were fabulous, and I really grateful to my Livas clarinet friends, Nicolas Shipman, Laura Porter and Emily Preston, and to Stephen Willis for giving up their time for this worthy cause."

Simon Young said: "The concert was beautifully performed and we really appreciate all the effort that had gone into it.

"Some £700 was raised for Ollie’s charity, which is a fantastic amount and we just can’t thank all those involved and everyone who supported it, enough."
